Baby and pediatric osteopathy: gentle support for healthy development
Pregnancy, birth and the first years of growing up demand a lot from a child’s entire system. Sometimes this manifests itself in complaints such as restlessness, preferred posture or sleep problems – but even without clear signs, it can be valuable to have a checkup on how the system is moving and how the balance is between the different systems.
As an osteopath with extensive experience and an additional two-year specialization in infant and child osteopathy, I work with gentle, attuned techniques appropriate for babies and children.
When do parents choose infant and child osteopathy?
Parents contact them when there are signs that stand out, the child himself indicates symptoms or experiences challenges in development.
With babies, this may include, for example:
- Preferred posture or flattened head

- Restlessness, crying a lot or difficulty being comforted
- Difficulty sleeping
- Intestinal cramps, reflux or frequent spitting up
- Difficulty drinking or swallowing
- Overstretching or just feeling very weak
In toddlers and young children:
- Sensitivity to stimuli
- Sleep problems or overstimulation
- Abdominal complaints
- Recurrent pressure around ears or cavities
- Motor challenges such as rolling, crawling or walking
- Quick frustration or emotional outbursts
- Learning/focus/reading problems
Osteopathy falls under complementary care and can be used to provide the child with additional support both motor and mental.
A preventive baby check after childbirth
Even without obvious symptoms, a baby can receive an osteopathic check after delivery. Childbirth demands a lot from a baby’s body. Sometimes tensions are not visible but can be felt, for example in the neck, diaphragm or around the head.
During a consultation, a calm and gentle check is made to see if the body can move freely. If necessary, subtle techniques are applied to support the child in relaxation and balance. Often one treatment is enough to release any tension and to understand what the possible cause of the complaints may be.
Development, growth and self-regulatory capacity
Babies and young children have great learning and adaptability. Their bodies and brains are in full development, from the nervous system to motor skills. All tissues are continuously under the influence of various factors: growth, adaptability, stress, lifestyle.
Key development processes include:
- Teething
- Growth of the skull and sinuses
- Development of senses
- Sensomotor development (cooperation between feeling, moving and processing)
- Motor milestones such as rolling, sitting, crawling and walking
- Learning/reading/math etc.
When the body can move freely, it supports natural development. Osteopathy focuses on reducing movement restrictions so that the child can use their system optimally for growth and learning and there is no loss of energy to bottlenecks/movement restrictions.
My method in practice
In my practice, I look at the whole picture: pregnancy, childbirth, your child’s development and character.
I work with gentle, non-manipulative techniques. There is no cracking; I follow the child’s pace, behavior and observe how the body responds.
My goal is to create space where there is tension so that the body can regain its natural freedom of movement. From the freedom of movement comes a positive effect on the system and thus on the self-healing ability.
